University Nationals Tournament Team/Player Eligibility

CUPA Policy #12
September 1999
September 2002

TEAM:

To enter the Canadian University Ultimate Championships, a team must represent a specific University (Post Secondary School) in Canada and must be nominated by the CUPA region where the school resides. If there is insufficient space to accommodate all teams that want to play, spots will be allocated as follows:

(1) each region will be allocated a specific number of spots using the same policy as used for the club nationals,
(2) if a particular region has more teams than spots available, a regional tournament will be held to determine a ranking of the teams (such a tournament can be waived if all the teams agree on a ranking),
(3) given the team rankings, spots will be allocated to the "first teams" from each school before any "second teams" receive spots.

PLAYERS:

All team members must be full time students at the school their team represents and must be able to provide photo ID to tournament officials when requested. Proof of full time status can be in the form of a letter signed and sealed by the school’s Registrar. Here is a sample:

"This letter is to confirm that the above named students are registered full time at the University of Ontario for the 1997-98 Winter Session which commenced September 7, 1997 and closes April 29, 1998."

A player can only play a maximum of five (5) University Championships.

EXCEPTIONS:

Since the sport of Ultimate is still new and growing, some exceptions to the eligibility rules will be allowed.

I. Each team will be allowed up to three players that do not fit the "full time at the specific school" rule. These players must

(1) be currently attending at least one course at a university in Canada, and
(2) that university must not also be entering a team in the tournament in the same division.

II. The "maximum of five championships" rule will be waived until the year 2004.

III. Special exceptions can be considered by the CUPA Board. For example, a student who is not currently registered, but is working in a university sponsored co-op program might be allowed to play (as a regular member or as one of the three exceptions). Such exceptions must be applied for in writing as early as possible, but at the very latest at least two weeks before the tournament.
