Seventeen teams (9 open, 7 womens, and 1 coed) attended the second annual CEUUC. Trent, the lone coed team, won their division by default and then joined the open division. This gave the open division 10 teams; two pools of 5 were set up for Saturday with all teams playing 4 games. The womens division teams played the first four games of a round robin on Saturday and will play the last two on Sunday. The weather left a little to be desired. It was a bit chilly (9C) and very cloudy. At about 1pm, the clouds opened up and rain continued for the rest of the day. Spirits didn't seem to be dampened, players could warm up in the club house between games or during byes. It was a godsend that the Fletchers kitchen help had a big supply of hot chocolate. At the end of the day, dinner was served in the club house - the pastitsio (Greek version of lasagna) was a big hit.
The McMasterB open team had a number of female players, and, as luck would have it, they ended up in the same pool (B) as the Trent coed team. The game was very closely matched and went to soft cap at 11-11. MacB scored the final two to win the match up. Never-the-less, due to a three way tie, the Trent team finished higher in the pool and advanced into the top six teams for Sunday.
The most exciting game in the womens pool had to be the match up between McGillA and QueensA. McGill has been the dominant team in the East for the last couple years, but Queens has improved tremendously. Both teams played a lot of zone defense and both had excellent handlers that seemed able to dump and swing forever (especially McGill). However, the defences seldom allowed up field passes, so points went on for quite a while. Just watching the cups run made me tired. I was really impressed that they continued to make layout D attempts even after more than 15 fully across the field dump and swings - Wow! Queens was victorious in this game (9-7).
It's likely these two teams will meet again in the finals - I'm looking forward to it.

Better weather, no, much better weather - cloudy and chilly in the morning, but sunny later in the day, no rain at all. The womens division completed their round robin - each team still had two games. The toughest schedule today had to have gone to Guelph. They first played McGillA and won by a score of 9 to 8. Then played TorontoA and won 9-7. These three teams finished 2,3,4 in the pool. The problem was that I seeded Guelph way too low - my mistake, sorry. (In their other game, McGillA and TorontoA played McGillB and TorontoB respectively.) Immediately after these two games the semis started - Guelph had to play McGillA again. This time McGill was victorious. QueensA doubled TorontoA's score in the other semi. Then doubled McGillA's score in the finals. Congratulations to QueensA "Paper Bag Princesses" for their first tournament championship!
The open quarterfinal pitted the second places against the third places and the fourth places against the fifth places from Saturday's pools. There were no upsets - the higher seed won in all four games. The seconds vs thirds quarters weren't all that close, but the fourths vs fifths were tight (10-8 and 13-12). The biggest story of the semis was QueensA's loss to McGillA by a score of 13-12. Early in the game, Queens was on fire and dominating the game; they had a 10-4 lead at one point. They seemed to lose their focus: they were way ahead and surely expected to win. But McGill never gave up. Their come back was quite impressive. The open final was something of a clinic given by the McMasterA team, the reigning National Champs.
All of the top teams from this weekend will attend the Fifth Annual Canadian University Ultimate Championships in two weeks at UBC in Vancouver. I'd like to wish them all the best of luck!
