1) Observers will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. We have a very limited number of Observers available, but will try to cover as many games as possible. Only one team needs to request Observers for the game to be observed; the opposing team cannot decline the request once it is made.

2) At the beginning of each observed game, the Observers will discuss their role with the Captains. Please feel free to ask them any questions and offer any concerns you may have.

3) During this tournament, Observers will ONLY make active line calls. This includes in/out calls and off-sides. Any other foul or call (sideline travels, up/down calls, picks, etc.) must be made on the field first and appealed to the Observer for them to rule. Observers will also keep track of timing concerns, including elapsed time between points and delays in putting the disc into play.

4) If a disputed call occurs, the affected players will be allowed 20-30 seconds of discussion. If, after that time, the call cannot be resolved, either player can request a ruling from an Observer. The Observer will then rule based on their perspective. Only one player needs to make the request for the Observer to make a ruling; the other player(s) cannot decline the request once it has been made.

5) Once made, the Observer's ruling is FINAL. Play will resume immediately. Players cannot appeal to another Observer for a second opinion, nor can they press the Observer to reconsider the ruling.

6) There is a tendency among some players to call a foul, have it contested, then immediately turn to the Observer for their ruling, assuming the Observer will back up their view. You should advise your players that such a quick request can play against your team, since the Observer may not have seen the play the same way. Often times, it may be best to simply accept the contest and put the disc back into play.

7) If a team is off-sides during the pull, the Observer on that line will raise their hand. If your opponent is off-sides, you may request a re-pull, but you must do so immediately. Otherwise, your team will have to play the pull.

8) Players are expected to play the game with full respect to the Spirit of the Game. Intentional fouls and poor sportsmanship will be subject to penalties under the Card system. Any player displaying unsportsmanlike behavior will first earn a Yellow Card, which serves as a warning. A second infraction by the same player will result in a Red Card, and the player will be suspended for the rest of the game. If a Red Card is awarded during the second half of a game, the suspension will carry over to the first half of the team's next game. Five cards awarded to a single team will result in that team forfeiting the game. Three red cards by the same player over the course of the tournament will result in the player's ejection from the tournament.

9) Please make every effort to keep your sidelines clear of players. It is impossible for Observers to make clear line calls if a team of players is hanging over the sidelines. If necessary, you may wish to designate someone on your team to keep an eye on your line.

10) Please keep in mind that Observers are not referees. In other sports, referees control the game at their discretion. Observers, however, can only rule on calls made by players in the game. Please remind your players not to heckle or abuse the Observers, as referees are often treated. Observers are simply here to help the game as a neutral perspective.
