My first Nationals was in '92 in Vancouver, and I have played unremarkably in a number of Cdn Nationals since then and in three World Clubs with Vancouver's Farm Accidents. I've tried to help out as a volunteer in the VUL for years now. I have worked at Nationals 2000, Flower Bowl, college regionals and CUPA regionals as a member of the organizing committee or as an observer. . .
Despite a few flaws -- I have a bad back, I walk with a limp, I have blind spots in both eyes, I don't hear so well, and I am bald -- I certainly qualify for an official position with the Montreal '03 team in ways I cannot begin to explain. . .
Most importantly, I have no association whatsoever with Jack Webb. . .
I started my Ultimate career with four years at Duke University, including one trip to Mid-Atlantic Regionals in 1996. I'm perhaps best remembered at Duke for throwing a wicked fake on a tap-in. Since then, I've played on several Open club teams, including one trip to Southern Regionals in 2001. I've also spent the better part of the last eight years playing in various leagues in the Atlanta Flying Disc Club. My observing resumé includes the 2002 UPA Club Championships, as well as this year's Terminus in Atlanta.
Why an observer? Because I found that when I play, I always have best perspective.
No matter where I am on the field, even with a nice hill in the way, I can tell
if you're in or out. I also know that the foul you just called was simply heinous.
Seriously. Yeah, "I had position." Riiight. Becoming an observer just
seemed like the most logical outlet for these "skills". Hopefully,
this, plus my inimitable Southern charm, will come in handy in Montreal.
