Fields
The majority of the tournament fields will be in the heart of the city - the Halifax Commons and the Wanderers Grounds - to allow players the greatest opportunity to enjoy all aspects of the city. Located in the centre of the Halifax peninsula, the Commons have been a central part of city life for centuries. Originally created as "common" pasture for the residents of Halifax, the Commons have evolved into the primary location for sport and recreation in the city. The Wanderers Grounds are a short walk from the Commons. These fields will be the site for evening marquee games.
Being very aware of the regular activity on the Commons from the wide range of sports that use the space, the CUC Fields Committee has partnered with the City of Halifax to develop a maintenance plan to ensure the best field quality of the Commons in many years. This plan involves early and regular turf maintenance to prepare for Nationals.
Field designations:
- 1, 2 Wanderers grounds
- 3 to 9 Halifax Commons (map below)
- 10 to 13 Clayton Park satellite field (turf)
- 14 to 17 Graves Oakley satellite field
Satellite sites
The main satellite site, Clayton Park (fields 10 to 13, driving directions and map from Google), is a new facility that uses state-of-the-art FIELDturf technology. FIELDturf is described as "a new innovation in sport surfacing". This new turf is essentially a green shag carpet with soft "grass" fibers covering a base of sand and crumb rubber from recycled tires. This surface has all the attributes of natural grass but can be used in all-weather situations. This turf looks like grass, feels like grass and plays like grass. For the players, natural-turf cleats are recommended, with some players preferring turf shoes.
We also have satellite fields at Graves-Oakley Memorial Park in Spryfield. These will be fields 14 to 17 (driving directions and map from Google).
The final schedule has made the use of the Burnside fields unnecessary. Only the Clayton Park and Graves-Oakley Memorial Park fields will be needed for CUC 2006.
Finals field
Huskies Stadium at St. Mary's University will host the finals on Sunday, August 20th. The facilities include an all-weather FIELDturf playing surface for the players and stadium seating for the spectators.
Contingency fields
In the event of rain, the city of Halifax closes all grass fields. Should this happen, CUC will reschedule games on its available all-weather fields (Clayton Park field, Burnside field, Husky stadium and Wickwire field).
Wickwire Field at Dalhousie University will be a contingency field. This surface is generation 1 turf and will require turf shoes for optimal play.
