Once again, the dominant team to emerge from Quebec
is Montreal's Mephisto. They are gearing up for their eighth appearance
at National's this year. Coming off of a second place finish last
year they are hoping for another strong finish at Nationals. Mephisto's
biggest provincial rivals are Les Q out of Quebec City. Though they
have never beaten Mephisto, Les Q are building on their sheer athleticism
and have emerged this year with their
strongest team to date. Look for Les Q to surprise teams that show
up ill prepared to play. There are two new open teams in Quebec
this year. Omen areemerging as the number 2 team out of Montreal.
They are a young, athletic team predominantly made up of university
players. Magma was put together earlier this year by a former Mephisto
player. They have battled with Omen over the summer and though they
are lacking in experience, Magma has impressed with their potential
to be a very strong team. Look for all of the Quebec teams to come
out strong at this years Nationals and post very solid
results.
Mixed
Despite ominous weather predicitions, the storms
held off until the very end of the day on Saturday, July 12th, 2003.
Four teams from Montreal, one team from Sherbrooke, one team from
Quebec and one team from Trois Rivieres battled it out on the grounds
of the Douglas Hospital in a double-elimination format with only
four spots up for grabs for Nationals.
First round saw an intense, well-matched game between
Coming Soon (Montreal) and Obscurantis Order (Quebec). After some
hot defensive plays by both teams and some beautifully flowing offense,
Quebec upset the higher-ranked Coming Soon to take their first win
of the day, 13-10. Loki (Montreal) had an easy win over Stakatak
(Sherbrooke) while Toys (Montreal) suffered an defeat at the hands
of MID (Trois Rivieres) after a hard-fought game, 8-13.
Obscurantis Order matched up against #1 ranked
IAX in round two and despite their atheticism and posititive energy,
weren’t able to continue their winning streak. They lost 15-3
to IAX, who played solid defense and worked smoothly as a unit to
score after causing turnovers. Loki beat MID 13-6 while Toys suffered
their second loss of the day to a strong-looking Sherbrooke team.
Round three saw four teams, each who had suffered
one loss, compete to advance to the three/four final. Coming Soon
played solid offense and capitalized on their defensive strengths
to win 13-6 over MID. In a closer battle for the back-door game
to go, Stak emerged the winner in a 13-12 victory over Obscurantis
in a huge upset win which saw the #7 seed defeat the #4 seed for
a berth at Nationals.
In games for seeding, IAX went on a 14-2 run after
being down to LOKI 3-1 in the first minutes of the game for first
place. Final score, 15-5. Coming Soon and Stak also had a tight
game, but the team from Montreal emerged victorious in the drizzle,
securing their third place spot to nationals with a 15-10 win.
In all, an excellent show of athleticism, spirit
and a drive to win made every game thrilling to watch and even more
exciting to play.
Congratulations to Iax, Loki, Coming Soon and Stakatak
who will represent Quebec at CUC 2003 in the Mixed Division.
