"Forcing" Home and the "Make
Poverty History" Campaign
A "Forcing" Home event is a way for Ultimate
players to collectively reach out to homeless individuals and shelters.
Ultimate players simply gather together for an Ultimate tournament,
musical evening or even league game while collecting warm clothing
and some money to donate. In 2003, over 300 Ultimate players participated
in "Forcing" Home-themed events in Winnipeg, Montreal,
Regina and Edmonton. In 2004, over 500 Ultimate players participated
in Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal and Fredericton. So far, eight frontline
homeless organizations across Canada have been supported; thousands
of dollars have been raised; thousands of items of warm clothing
have been shared; front page press, radio and television coverage
has been generated; and a politician has even "forced"
home with us both years.
This year a number of Make Poverty History Campaign
regional chairs and friends would like to support our "Forcing"
Home events (sometime during the week of November 22, Canada's National
Housing Day) by volunteering, providing white bracelets, providing
postcards to mail to the Prime Minister, providing information about
their online petition www.makepovertyhistory.ca/e/take-action/end-child-poverty.html
and sharing media connections.
This could be the year that, together, we may generate
a significant amount of support and compassion toward Canada's homeless
population. Please help us if you are up for it! To connect with
the "Make Poverty History" contact in your area or for
