Ultimate
Pickup at Home Base (CUPA-VC Ultimate Junior
Innovation Grant)
This past year Home Base hosted six Ultimate sessions
involving 12 youth participants and several staff members. Every
youth was new to the sport of Ultimate and each session began with
participants creating new rules and objectives to the game. This
creative process allowed the participants to contribute to the sessions,
which is sometimes an aspect that youth find exclusionary with traditional
sports. With little encouragement from staff, the youth automatically
incorporated both fun and cooperation into their games.
It is important for at-risk youth to have access to recreational
programs. The positive feedback from this program has garnered support
from Home Base to host 6 more Indoor Frisbee sessions this spring
at a local high school. I’m looking forward to it.

Halifax Ultimate Camp
for Kids (H.U.C.K)
In the summer of 2005, twenty youth from the Halifax
area met weekly to develop Ultimate skills and new friendships at
the Halifax Ultimate Camp for Kids or HUCK. Each player received
a disc and 8 weeks of coaching. The players ranged in age from 12-18,
experience from 0-12 months, and from both genders. Regardless of
age, experience, or gender each player came away with new skills
and hopefully a lifelong love for Ultimate.
The Halifax Ultimate Junior (HUJ) program, supported
by the Halifax Ultimate Recreation League (HURL) was responsible
for running this camp and had funding assistance from CUPA. This
camp was the first step in developing a solid juniors program in
Halifax.
We hope to continue this program during the upcoming
summers and if all goes well we’ll have a junior team together
for Nationals in Halifax this summer!

Saskatchewan Ultimate
Junior Program
On May 4th of 2005, the game started just like
any other. Each team stood at their goal line, hands were raised
and the pull was thrown. What followed however was no ordinary game.
For the first time in Saskatoon Ultimate was being played by students
outside of school hours. That cloudy day in May marked the birth
of the Saskatoon Ultimate Junior League.
The league consisted of 35 youths who were randomly
distributed into 2 teams each week so that they could play with
and meet new people. The league ran for 2 months and included 1
game and 1 practice a week. To the delight of the volunteer coaches,
the players took to the game quickly and their skills and improved
dramatically.
However, what pleased SUDS most was that all participants
played with respect for all other players and really exemplified
the spirit of Ultimate. SUDS is grateful for the cooperation of
CUPA and VC Ultimate. The money from the Innovation Grant was used
to secure fields for the junior league and covered the costs of
insurance.
Preparation for the 2006 Saskatoon Ultimate Junior
League is currently underway and SUDS, but more importantly Saskatoon’s
youth, is very excited.

Eagles and Doves Ultimate
Tournament
During the weekend of the 2005 Canadian Ultimate
Championships in Winnipeg, another exciting Ultimate event took
place. In the spirit of the North American Indigenous Games, which
recognizes cultural distinctiveness, and with the support of Sport
Manitoba, Manitoba Organization of Disc Sports (MODS), CUPA and
the Manitoba Aboriginal Sport and Recreation Council, the first
annual Eagles and Doves Ultimate tournament was born.
Lara Mussell, Canada's Aboriginal Athlete of the
Year and former Team Canada captain, led the Saturday clinics and
game, signed posters and distributed some of the 70 discs that were
donated by MODS. On Sunday, the young players and youth from Rossbrook
House drop-in centre watched the high calibre CUC finals at CanWest
Global Ballpark. (Extra Eagles and Doves tournament discs were given
to the budding Ultimate community at Rossbrook House.)
The Sharing Circle, a national series shown on
the CHUM group of stations and Bravo!, made a documentary of recent
Ultimate initiatives in some Manitoba Aboriginal communities (including
Eagles and Doves) and will broadcast it in 2006!
