Juniors Ultimate - Application Procedure
World Ultimate and
Guts Championships '04
Turku, Finland – August 1 – 7, 2004
The 2004 World Ultimate Junior Championships will be played in
conjunction with the World Ultimate and Guts Championhips. This
coming summer, the tournament will be held in Turku, Finland, August
1 to 7.
It is CUPA's intention to send one National team for each of the
two Junior divisions (Junior Open and Junior Women). In order to
do so, coaches, chaperons and players must be chosen in the near
future. So, this note is intended to be informational, as well
as notification that space on the team rosters is now up for application.
Each team will require one head coach and an assistant coach (or
second chaperon). Ideally, the teams will each include 15 to 18
players.
Coaches and Chaperons
Coaches and chaperons must be at least 25 years old, have experience
supervising and travelling with teenagers, and provide proof of
a high degree reliability and responsibility.
The head coach will be responsible for organizing return travel
to Turku from Winnipeg and accommodations for the entire team,
and collection of fees from players. He/She will also run a four
day training camp in Winnipeg, immediately prior to leaving for
Finland. During tournament play, the head coach will be directly
responsible for the team and its play.
The assistant coach (or second chaperon) will be responsible for
assisting the head coach in the above responsibilities, as well
as acquiring team uniforms.
All coaches and chaperons will be directly responsible for the
conduct of their respective teams and the safety of their players.
It is expected that the coaches and chaperons will adhere to all
regulations stated in the Canadian Junior Conduct Policy. A signed
policy must received by the Canadian Junior Coordinator before
selected coaches and chaperons may begin their responsibilities.
Coaches and chaperons are also expected to ensure that their players
adhere to the regulations stated on the Canadian Junior Conduct
Policy. Coaches and chaperons become responsible for the players
as soon as players are met in Winnipeg for training camp.
Costs and expenses for coaches and chaperons are still to be determined.
Players
Players will be selected for a National Junior Open team and a
National Junior Women's team. To be eligible as a team member,
players must have been born in 1985 or later.
All players will be expected to attend a four day training camp
in Winnipeg immediately prior to leaving for Turku. Players will
travel to Turku from Winnipeg with the team, under the responsibility
of the coaches and chaperons. All players are expected to adhere
to the regulations stated in the Canadian Junior Conduct Policy,
regardless of the players' ages. The Canadian Junior Coordinator
must receive a signed policy before a player is officially considered
a team member.
Fees for each player will be approximately $1250 plus travel costs
between Winnipeg and Turku (approximately $2500). Players will
be responsible for getting themselves to (and from) Winnipeg. The
$1250 fee includes tournament fees, accommodations, meals, and
transport to the fields each day. We are currently looking for
ways to lower the travel costs as much as possible.
It is hoped that some of these expenses might be covered through
fundraising efforts. Players that cannot attend without some sort
of subsidy should indicate that fact on their application.

Selection of Coaches and Chaperons
The selection process for coaches and chaperons
will begin immediately. Those interested in being a coach or chaperon
are asked to submit a letter of application to the Canadian Junior
Ultimate Coordinator no later than Friday, December 12, 2003. The
letter must include a personal bio, stating the applicant's experience
as a coach, experience as a chaperon or supervisor of minors, personal
and team expectations and goals. The application should be accompanied
by a letter of reference from a person of authority who will vouch
for the applicant as a reliable and responsible adult and his/her
ability to supervise a group of minors on an extended trip overseas.
Also, a signed Junior Conduct Policy (available on the Canadian
Junior Ultimate website) must accompany the application.
Mailing address, email address, and phone numbers should be included
on all letters of application. The letter of application should
also state the position for which the applicant is applying (head
coach, assistant coach, chaperon) and for which team (Open or Women).
On Saturday, December 13, 2003, all information
will be forwarded to the CUPA Board of Directors. Board members
and the Junior Coordinator will be responsible for choosing the
coaches and chaperons. If a member of the selection committee chooses
to apply for a position as coach or chaperon, that member will
immediately be removed from the selection committee and will not
be privy to any information received by selection committee members.
Selection of Players

All parts of the form must be completed. Applications must be received
by the Canadian Junior Ultimate Coordinator no later than Friday,

player is able to perform, the player's experience, leadership
skills, level of responsibility, self-control, reliability and
sportsmanship, ability to play as a member of an elite team of
athletes, and respect for rules of conduct. Nominators must provide
a contact phone number and email address.

Ultimate website) must also accompany the application.
On Saturday, December 13, 2003 all applications will be forwarded
to the members of the selection committee. The selection committee
will be chosen by the CUPA Board of Directors and must include
the coaches of each team and the Canadian Junior Coordinator.
All applicants will be informed of their status with the team
no later than Monday, January 5, 2004.
Mandate of Selection Committees
The mandate of the selection committees, as stated by the Canadian
Ultimate Players Association, is to select coaches and players
who will best represent Canada at the World Ultimate Championships
in Turku, Finland in 2004. The team will be selected with the intention
of assembling the most competitive team possible. At the same time,
Spirit of the Game, responsibility, personal conduct and self-control
will be taken into serious consideration. It is expected that all
members of the Canadian National teams will represent Canada positively
and proudly.
Decisions will be made from information provided by applicants,
referees and nominators. The selection committee reserves the right
to interview any party they feel would be able to provide further
information about specific applicants (coaches, chaperons and players).
